Frame your

Table

A guide to dining room floor rugs.

Choosing the perfect dining room rug

Floor rugs significantly enhance the aesthetics of your dining area. However, not all rugs are suited for this environment, and it can be challenging to find a rug that can withstand the activity of this area. It is useful to keep in mind that chairs are often moved in and out, and the potential for spills and crumbs to make their way off the table.

To achieve a functional and beautiful space, consider these key factors to before making your rug selection.

The

Shape

Choose a rug based on the shape of your table. A well-chosen rug will frame your table and unify the pieces to create a harmonious and cohesive space.

The right choice of rug will frame your table and create a cohesive space

Pile & Weave

We recommend low pile or flatweave, closely‑woven rugs for this area. These are a great choice as they are durable, easy to clean, and less likely to catch.

Shaggy pile or high looped styles may hinder or snag your chairs moving in and out, while also allowing crumbs to fall into the depths of the pile (trapping them and making cleaning difficult).

Size

Your floor rug should comfortably fit all your dining furniture. When pulling out your chair, the chair should remain on the rug, (this helps avoid chair legs catching on the seam, becoming a trip hazard and damaging your rug over time).

As a general rule, your rug should extend at least 60cm beyond all sides of your table.

Use these basic recommendations to find the most suitable size for your table setting.

Colour & Style

Lighter tones may emphasise soiling, while darker hues and patterns can help disguise spots and stains.

Fibre

There are numerous fibres to consider in this area. Wool is naturally stain resistant, while synthetic fibres (like our outdoor ranges) are easy to clean and care for.

For durability, help and jute are good options, but can be prone to staining from spills. If using a natural fibre rug, we recommend a stain protector is applied before use.

Avoid viscose or bamboo silk fibres in the dining area.

Consider an

Outdoor rug

These now match the look and feel of indoor pieces. Durable and easy to clean, they are a great option for families with children and pets.
